Thimble Summer is a novel, written by Elizabeth Enright. This novel has won the Newbury Award in 1939. Originally written in English, this is the Chinese translated version. 

Note: We would recommend this title for children who has achieved an intermediate to advance level of Chinese. Available in paperback, simplified Chinese. No coloured pictures inside as this is a short novel. 
The Story
The story is set in the Great Depression period. Garnet Linden is a young girl who meets the world with wide-eyed, naive wonder. However, at the beginning of the summer, her small farming community is facing a terrible drought, tough growing season and her family is having financial difficulties. 
One day, while swimming in a creek with her brother, Garnet finds a silver thimble in the mud. She is convinced that the thimble is magic. Her brother, Jay, scoffs, but from this moment on, things do indeed seem to get better: The rains come, Garnet's longing for adventure is satisfied and an orphaned boy becomes part of her family, etc...
About The Author
Elizabeth Enright (1907-1968) was born in Oak Park, Illinois, but spent most of her life in / near New York City. Illustration was Enright's original career choice and she studied art in Greenwich, Connecticut; Paris, France; and New York City. After creating her first book in 1935, she developed a taste, and quickly demonstrated a talent, for writing. Throughout her life, she won many awards, including the 1939 John Newbery Medal for Thimble Summer and a 1958 Newbery Honor for Gone-Away Lake. Among her other beloved children's titles are her books about the Melendy family, includingThe Saturdays, published in 1941. Her books has been translated into many languages throughout the world.
