Description

Red Bean Porridge Granny and The Tiger is an Korean original - a very popular folktale in Korea that parents can read to their kid. This title has won the Best Children Book in Korea in 2006. This is the Chinese translated version. 

The Story

In summer, a granny is caught and is about to be eaten by a hungry tiger. She convinces him to wait until the fall so that she can harvest her crop of red beans and make him a bowl of delicious red bean porridge. He agrees and let her go. Harvest comes and she fulfils her promise. As she is cooking the porridge, the thought of being eaten up by a tiger saddens her. Her tears are noticed by the different things in her house, such as the turtle, mortar, straw-hat, etc. They promise to help her if she gives them a bowl of her delicious red bean porridge. When the tiger eventually turns up, her friends come to the her rescue. 

Parents can teach their kid about honouring their words, just like the Red Bean Soup Granny and showing kindness to people around us. 

This book is in soft cover. Simplified chinese. There are no hanyu pinyin. For reading to the child, this book may suit children of 5 years old and above. For self read, we would recommend this book for children above 8.

仔细观察以动物为主轴的传说故事,就可发现人类对于动物的定位一直在改变。起初,动物是以神的象征出场,比人类优越;接着,动物与人类平等共存;最后,人类优于动物。《红豆粥婆婆》的出现,是在从“动物优于人类”转入下个时期的过渡期里。尤其是从故事当中可以看出,帮助老奶奶的石臼、草席、背架等皆是农用器具,因此可以断定这是农耕时代之后的故事。
韩国各种传说故事当中,最常登场的动物是老虎。老虎所扮演的角色,不是人们畏惧的对象,就是人们崇拜的对象。老虎是动物之中力气最大、最凶狠的动物,古代的人也经常遭到老虎的攻击。因此人类将老虎神格化,当作山神来崇拜。以前的人走在偏僻的山路时,都会在牛或马的脖子上挂个铃铛,这也是为了让老虎听到铃铛声后,不敢扑上来。
《红豆粥婆婆》是所有以老虎为题材的传说故事当中最著名的故事。从前山里住着一位老奶奶,有一天突然出现一只老虎,说要吃了老奶奶,老奶奶求老虎等到红豆收成、让她喝完红豆粥后,再来吃她。老奶奶以红豆粥来拖延死亡时间。约定的时间终于到了。老奶奶煮好红豆粥后,开始抽泣了起来。家里的东西一件一件跳出来向老奶奶寻问怎么了。当这些物品听完老奶奶的原委后,各喝了一碗红豆粥。接着躲到厨房的角落里去,终于合力赶走了老虎。老虎受到攻击、动弹不得的画面,令人感到痛快。
栗子崩老虎的眼睛,乌龟咬老虎的鼻子,大便让老虎滑倒,锥子刺老虎的屁股,石臼让老虎砸到头,草席将老虎卷起来,最后背架把老虎背出去,丢在很深的江水里。这些连续性的画面让人像是在看一部电影,不仅趣味横生,更给人一种痛快感。
《红豆粥婆婆》是富含韩国人讽刺与幽默感的民间故事。老虎是毫无理由就说要吃掉老奶奶的反派形象,象征权力者。体积又小又弱的物品,合力将老虎丢进河里淹死的结局,隐含着古代百姓想合力惩罚恶权者的心愿。不过老奶奶所准备的食物,为何偏偏是红豆粥呢?红豆是带有红色的农作物,自古以来,人们都会将红色与咒术联想在一起,更相信红色具有驱除噩运的力量。因此韩国人认为,在冬至那天吃红豆粥可以避免恶魔附身。
《红豆粥婆婆》的另一个特色是拟声语与拟态语,令儿童念来朗朗上口,故事看得更有乐趣。
